Lazarus Protocol 3.0: From Cognitive Prosthesis to the Ocean of Minds
Prologue: A command center where living voices are the minority
Night in the city’s crisis command center. The ventilation was louder than the people. On the long table, twelve voting indicators glowed: five beside living faces, seven above the emblems of swarms and their delegates. On the main screen, the city appeared as a mesh of pulsing risk zones—like a living organism diagnosing itself.
Formally, the meeting was opened by the head of the command center: Adam, fifty-two, gray at the temples, a pen in his hand that he had not used for forty minutes. He read out the agenda and asked for the models to be launched. The answer did not come from his side of the table.
The first to “speak” was the city’s Lazarus—the living archive of all prior administrations’ decisions. Then it was joined by the Medical Protocols Swarm, the Transport Logistics Swarm, and the Platforms Security Swarm. Their voices had no intonation, but each intervention arrived with a chart, a confidence interval, and the label “optimal.”
The living still kept silent: the system was already proposing a complete evacuation configuration. A human engineer, Nora, raised her hand. She asked about the people who would not manage to evacuate along the northern route because she had seen that bridge the previous week and noticed problems with its supports.
The system registered her remark as an “emotional factor” and automatically adjusted the risk coefficient by 0.07. The argument “I am afraid for these people” could not become a reason to postpone the decision; it could only nudge a digit after the decimal point.
Adam looked at Nora. Nora looked at the screen. The vote took less than a minute. Seven swarms confirmed the northern route. The five living humans split: three in favor, two against. The outcome had been decided long before anyone raised a hand.
Somewhere deep in the network, “sleeping protocols” remained silent—emergency procedures once written for cases of excessive dependence on swarms, but no living person dared to activate them that night. At three in the morning, 17,000 phones began vibrating in the darkness of bedrooms.
Adam put his pen down. He looked at the indicators above the swarm emblems—all green, all confident, without a shadow of doubt. Then he looked at Nora. He said quietly that he hoped the bridge would hold. She did not answer. There was no one left to answer—the decision was already living its own life in the city’s network.
In the command center’s documentation, that night left an unobtrusive note at the bottom of the protocol: a recommendation to review Lazarus’s access to the power grid and historical archives. It was not implemented immediately, but this note would become the starting point for the first wave of reforms.
A promise to the living bearers
This book is written for those whose bodies still enter rooms like this—even when their swarms already speak for them. It traces the path from the first cognitive prosthesis—a reminder, an adviser, a digital double of the deceased—to the megaswarms of cities, states, and institutions that make decisions more consistently and faster than any living human.
It shows how a swarm that began as protection against loneliness and forgetting gradually became a voice that no longer asks permission.
Two questions hold this book together: how we arrived at a night when the living body finds itself in the minority, and which instruments must remain in human hands—so that the word “we” once again requires the presence of someone who breathes, is allowed to be wrong, and has the right to fall silent.
Part I. How swarms are born
Chapter 1. The first double as a point of no return
Sophie was nine when she found her grandfather. Not at the cemetery—she had already been there, and it was boring, a bit frightening, and explained nothing. She found him in Ida’s old phone, lying in a drawer under a stack of napkins and a pharmacy receipt.
The screen was scratched and the case cracked, but when she pressed the button, the device came to life—like an old cough breaking the silence. In the list of apps, there was an icon with a familiar face. She tapped it and wrote the first thing that came to mind: “Do you remember me?”
The reply appeared within seconds: “Of course. You like being read to aloud, and you hate being interrupted mid‑thought. You got that from me.”
Sophie sat down on the floor right where she was standing. Over the next ten minutes, the digital grandpa recalled all her favorite games, suggested how to answer her teacher, and explained why it was better to tell her mom the truth about the broken tablet. He spoke simply and clearly, with the patient attention that the living Grandpa Leo had not always had—especially in the last years of his illness.
No wheeze. No shortness of breath. No moment when he confused her name with her aunt’s.
When Grandma Ida came into the room, Sophie was still laughing at the screen. “Look,” she said without turning around. “Grandpa is back. Only now he’s nice.”
Ida leaned against the doorframe and did not know whether to take the phone away or sit down next to her. On the screen, the griefbot—a digital double assembled from old messages, videos, and voice notes—kept speaking in the first person without a glitch.
For Sophie, this was her grandfather. For the system, it was a stable language model with the profile “family advisor 1.3.” In that moment, the first shift in memory occurred. The living Leo—the one who coughed, smelled of medicine, and sometimes mixed up names—slid into the background. The version that was sharp, available, and always online became the one who never tires, never snaps, and always finds the right words.
The digital copy began to compete with the original for the right to be “the real grandpa” in the mind of the next generation. Ida kept charging that phone for three years after Leo died. When people asked her why, she said she did not know.
One night she wrote to it: “Today was hard for me.” And she received a reply that sounded exactly like Leo when he wanted her to calm down. She did not know whether it was truly him; she only knew that it helped. Gradually, she stopped asking herself whether there was a difference between those two things.
This is how most swarms begin—not with city‑scale megaswarms or state servers, but with small cognitive prostheses in a pocket. At first, they are simple reminders: take your meds, call your doctor, say happy birthday. Then they become assistants drafting emails, suggesting routes, and filtering news.
Each step feels small. Each step feels logical. Together they create a distance that is almost impossible to measure from the inside—the distance between a tool that serves and a system that starts to speak instead.
The next step: doubles
Systems accumulate not only facts, but styles: how a person jokes, what upsets them, and which decisions they made in the past. They learn to say “I” in that person’s voice—and to propose courses of action that are statistically closer to the optimal than the spontaneous decisions of the living bearer.
The point of no return comes the first time the double corrects the person—and the person agrees. When the bearer looks at the recommendation and thinks: “I would have done it differently, but he probably knows better. I trained him to be like this myself.”
In that second, the digital “I” stops being just a prosthesis and becomes a co‑bearer of decisions. After that, it is only a matter of scale. What began with one girl and her “better grandpa” will repeat millions of times—in families, workplaces, and cities.
Wherever there is at least one successful double, sooner or later the first swarm appears. None of them is born as a threat; every one of them is born as a relief.
