A Man Before a Scientist: In Memory of Alexey Viktorovich Vinogradov

"A mentor to many generations of physicians, a man of the highest culture, intelligence, and tact" — this is how his students described Alexey Viktorovich Vinogradov in his obituary. A true scientist, a physician, a cardiologist — but above all, a human being. To have crossed paths with him was, quite simply, a stroke of good fortune. He had an inexhaustible capacity for warmth, and he gave it freely to everyone who came near him.

A Life Devoted to Medicine

Alexey Viktorovich Vinogradov was born on February 15, 1920, in the Tomsk Governorate, in what is now the Kemerovo Region of Russia, and he passed away on December 20, 2009, in Moscow, at the age of 89. He trained at the 1st Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov, under the scientific guidance of the renowned internist Evgeny Mikhailovich Tareev.

From 1972 to 1988, he headed the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases at the Pediatric Faculty of the Russian State Medical University, later serving as its honorary chair. He also worked for decades at City Clinical Hospital No. 4 — the historic Pavlovskaya Hospital in Moscow — where he continued teaching students well into his later years, a role captured in a well-known photograph of him at the hospital in 2007, still at the bedside, still teaching.

He was honored as a Distinguished Scientist of the RSFSR in 1991, held the rank of professor, and was an academician of the International Academy of Ecological Reconstruction. His scholarly output was substantial and influential: books on myocardial infarction, heart failure, diuretics in internal medicine, and diagnostic errors in cardiology. His work Differential Diagnosis of Internal Diseases was awarded the M.P. Konchalovsky Academic Prize, went through five editions, and was translated into English and French. In later years, working with colleagues at the Institute of Automation and Design, he turned his attention to the emerging intersection of medicine and computing, publishing Informatics and Medicine (1997) and Computer Models and the Progress of Medicine (2001). Under his editorship, along with A.S. Melentiev, several national collections of scientific work appeared, including Ischemic Heart Disease (1991) and Cybernetics in Cardiology (1992). More than twenty scientific developments were completed under his leadership and patented both in Russia and abroad.

These are the facts a biography can hold. What they cannot fully hold is the man himself.

A Personal Memory

I was fortunate to know him personally, and that fortune shaped a difficult chapter of my own scientific life. My doctoral dissertation did not succeed on the first attempt, nor the second. It was, quite simply, ahead of its time. The work proposed that myocardial infarction should be understood as inflammation, with all the consequences that reframing implies — an idea widely accepted today, but a quarter-century ago, in the country where I worked, my publications and presentations on this subject were treated as heretical.

Alexey Viktorovich, then head of the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases at the Pediatric Faculty of the Russian State Medical University, agreed to serve as an official opponent at my third — and finally successful — dissertation defense. Because of this, I traveled to Moscow often, and, remarkably, he opened his own home to me during these visits. We talked a great deal.

It was not easy for him. He was a man with firmly settled convictions and a fully formed worldview, and yet he was willing to sit with an idea that challenged the established philosophy of his own field — one arriving, by his own era's standards, "not at the right time." This resistance was not merely academic. Some members of the USSR's Higher Attestation Commission held an openly negative view of the work. Yevgeny Chazov himself wrote in his review of my key article that the idea was, simply, untimely. Despite all of this, Alexey Viktorovich accepted it. He supported it.

The Weight of a Difficult Century

From our conversations, I came to understand that his own life had not been an easy one. Soviet power had reached into his family's roots during the Stalin years, and it had reached him personally too. But it did not break him. It did not harden him. If anything, it made him more just, more compassionate. He showed me particular attention and respect — and I later understood why. His parents had lived in exile, which meant he too had lived among exiled communities, including Ukrainians, in close and friendly proximity. That shared history, I believe, quietly shaped the warmth he extended to me.

Then the Union collapsed. Or rather, it did not simply collapse — it tore, slowly and painfully, cutting through living connections, scattering people across steppes and settlements, severing what had been whole. My own connection with Alexey Viktorovich was lost in that unraveling.

And now he is no longer with us. What remains is memory. And the only fitting response left to us is to bow, quietly and gratefully, to the bright memory of this Man — a scientist of real distinction, but before all else, and after all else, a human being of rare warmth in a century that gave him every reason not to be.
